An excellent evening was enjoyed at St Aidan Freemasons’ Hall, Blackhill, as Companions gathered to celebrate two significant milestones in the life of Derwentside Royal Arch Chapter, the exaltation of a new Companion and the recognition of half a century of dedicated service.
The meeting marked the exaltation of Comp Malcolm Ord into the Chapter, an occasion made all the more special as Derwentside Royal Arch Chapter continues to go from strength to strength just two years after its formation. The Chapter was created following the consolidation of three former chapters and has rapidly established itself as a vibrant and growing Royal Arch presence in the area.
Central to the evening was the celebration of 50 years of service to Royal Arch Freemasonry by Eric Heaviside, the Chapter’s founder and a former head of Durham Freemasons. His dedication and leadership were formally recognised during the meeting.
The 50-year certificate was presented by Clinton Leeks, Deputy Head of Durham Freemasons Royal Arch. The evening was further enhanced by the presence of a later successor to Eric as head of Durham Freemasons, John Thompson, now serving as Assistant Head of all Freemasons in England and Wales.
Reflecting on the occasion, Eric said:
“It is deeply humbling to be recognised after fifty years in Royal Arch Freemasonry, particularly within a Chapter that means so much to me.
“Derwentside Royal Arch Chapter was born out of challenge, but what we see today is proof of what can be achieved through commitment, friendship and a shared belief in the future.”
Newly exalted, Malcolm said:
“It was a privilege to be exalted on such a special evening and to join a Chapter with such a strong sense of purpose and fellowship.”
Presenting the certificate, Clinton paid tribute to the founder’s service and influence:
“The founder’s contribution to Royal Arch Freemasonry in Durham and beyond cannot be overstated.
“Fifty years of service represents not only longevity, but leadership, vision and an enduring commitment to the values we hold dear.
“It is entirely fitting that this recognition took place within a Chapter he founded and continues to inspire.”
The evening perfectly captured the spirit of continuity within Freemasonry, as experience and tradition stood proudly alongside renewal and growth. With new members joining and strong leadership guiding its path, Derwentside Royal Arch Chapter continues to move confidently from strength to strength.
