Provincial Grand Master - Christmas Message

Dear Brethren and Companions,

As the festive season approaches, Andrea and I extend our heartfelt thanks and warmest greetings to you all. Reflecting on 2024, I’m filled with gratitude for your commitment, resilience, and enduring dedication to Freemasonry in Durham.

This year has brought its share of challenges, with some Lodges and Chapters feeling the necessity to return their warrants. While these moments are tinged with sadness, they have also been marked by dignity and the recognition of changing times. Yet, Freemasonry remains steadfast, guided by the Pro Grand Master’s strategy and our collective willingness to embrace innovation with the “Yes if” approach, which has resulted in the consecration of The Angler’s Lodge and Gambrinus Lodge earlier in the year and with the addition of Derwentside Chapter in September.

Your generosity has been truly inspiring, with continuing support for The Durham Freemasons Charity and the Masonic Charitable Foundation. Your efforts are making a tangible difference, especially in aiding those most in need. Equally, your dedication to the community and voluntary service in our communities highlights the very essence of our principles. It is this spirit of selflessness that continues to bolster our reputation as a force for good.

2025 holds great promise. I look forward to the consecration of further lodges, reflecting our ability to adapt and grow. The continuing growth of our Cornerstone community which is a shining example of our commitment to nurturing our membership, offering them opportunities to connect, learn, and thrive.

Membership remains at the heart of our progress, and I commend your outstanding response to the UGLE Membership Challenge. The introduction of new members and the revitalisation of the Royal Arch demonstrate your understanding that Pure and Antient Freemasonry encompasses the Three Degrees including the Royal Arch-a unity that strengthens us all.

Your hospitality and friendship have been unwavering during my visits across the province, from installations to centenaries, social gatherings to memorials, your warm welcome reminds me of the enduring bonds we share.

I thank our many volunteers who support our provincial executive; they give their time and expertise to support me and our membership, and I'm immensely grateful for their continuing efforts to ensure that we are stronger together.

As we celebrate Christmas, let us also remember those for whom this time of year is particularly difficult. Your efforts in supporting those in isolation this Christmas is the true spirit of Freemasonry-caring for others and working to improve the lives of those around us.

Let us embrace the opportunities ahead with optimism, continue supporting one another, and strengthen the foundation of our Craft for future generations.

Andrea joins me in wishing you and your families, a joyful Christmas, and a healthy, prosperous New Year.

Thank you.
