A memorable evening of celebration and symbolism was enjoyed at Hebburn Lodge No. 7201, in Jarrow Masonic Hall, on Friday 20th March, as members and visitors gathered to witness both a double initiation and the dedication of a new Lodge banner.
The ceremony saw two new members, Paul and Ronald, initiated into Freemasonry, marking the beginning of their Masonic journey in a Lodge rich in heritage and purpose. The occasion was further enhanced by the presence of the Provincial Team from Durham Freemasons, who joined the Brethren in celebrating this significant milestone.
Following the initiation ceremony, attention turned to the dedication of the Lodge’s new banner. The banner was presented by Paul O’Doherty to commemorate the formation of Hebburn Lodge in 2018, following the amalgamation of Heabrym Lodge No. 7201 and Palmer Lodge No. 9255. It stands as a lasting symbol of unity, continuity and shared purpose.
The dedication was conducted by Julian Ward, Provincial Grand Chaplain, who reflected on the deeper meaning of the banner and its place within the life of the Lodge.
“A banner is not merely a decoration, nor simply a piece of regalia. It is a symbol to be contemplated. It shows us where to gather, what we stand for and what we are called to become.
“The symbols displayed upon your banner, the pillars, the chequered pavement and the working tools, speak not only of the teachings of Freemasonry, but of the lives we are called to lead. They remind us of strength and balance, of navigating life with wisdom, and of living with equality, integrity and moral purpose.
“But a banner does more than display symbols. It reflects people. You are its living expression. Your conduct, your fellowship and your service give it meaning. It will stand as a silent witness to the standards you uphold today and the legacy you leave for those who follow.”
The evening was a powerful demonstration of Freemasonry in action, bringing together tradition, symbolism and the welcoming of new members. The newly dedicated banner will now take its place at the heart of Hebburn Lodge, serving as a constant reminder of its values, its history and its future.
