The final official visit of the current Acting Provincial Officers took place at the ever-welcoming Fawcett Lodge on Wednesday, 13th May, bringing together Brethren for an evening filled with excellent ritual, warm fellowship, humour, and reflection on a memorable Provincial year.
Before the Lodge opened, the Provincial Grand Master, John Watts, gathered the team together and thanked them sincerely for their unwavering support throughout his first year since being invested, recognising the commitment and enthusiasm shown across the Province.
After processing into the Lodge and the usual salutations were given, the Lodge was handed back to the Worshipful Master, Graham Turner, to conduct the business of the evening - a Second Degree ceremony which was performed to a very high standard. The candidate answered every question faultlessly, clearly demonstrating both confidence and preparation. The Worshipful Master carried out the majority of the work - with pace and precision - ensuring an enjoyable and well-delivered ceremony for all present.
At the Second Rising, a cheque for £100 was presented in support of Durham Freemasons Charity, continuing the Lodge’s commitment to charitable giving.
At the Festive Board, and in response to his toast, the Provincial Grand Master reflected warmly on the visit and the wider area, speaking fondly of Seaham’s Blast Beach and coastal walkway. He noted how much the town is “on the up” and remarked upon the obvious potential for attracting future candidates into Freemasonry.
Speaking about the Provincial team, he highlighted the importance of companionship and inclusion, particularly in combating mental health challenges and isolation. “Stronger Together” was a phrase that resonated throughout the evening, underlining the value of friendship, conversation, and shared experiences within Freemasonry.
The Provincial Grand Master also encouraged lodges to continue promoting Freemasonry proactively within their communities, suggesting initiatives such as local mail drops and reminding Brethren to include information regarding Women Freemasons when discussing the fraternity more widely. He also offered congratulations to the candidate, once again, for helping to “set the scene” for such an enjoyable evening.
As ever, the speeches brought both humour and memorable moments. The Provincial Senior Grand Warden, Kenneth Kent offered an amusing reflection using the word “marsupial”, describing how memories are collected over the years and revisited like treasures stored in a pouch. There were also fond recollections of certain culinary experiences from years gone by — including the infamous egg and salad cream sandwiches, complete with an unavoidable added ingredient of seaside sand!
A fine evening had by all.
