There was a unique and memorable moment at the meeting of the Provincial Stewards Lodge held at Durham Masonic Hall on Thursday, 2 July, when Provincial Grand Master John Watts received a special field promotion to become a Past Provincial Grand Steward.
The promotion was presented by Deputy Provincial Grand Master Andrew Foster and marked a historic first, as no serving Provincial Grand Master has previously been admitted into the Provincial Stewards Lodge. Fittingly, the presentation took place exactly one year after John was installed as Provincial Grand Master of Durham.
While the Provincial Grand Master holds the most senior office within the Province and Provincial Stewards receive the first Provincial appointment available to members, the symbolic promotion reflected something far more important than rank. It demonstrated that every role within the Province matters and highlighted the strength that comes from working together as one team.
Provincial Stewards are appointed in recognition of their commitment and service. Throughout the year they play an important role in supporting Provincial meetings and events, welcoming members and visitors, assisting with ceremonies and helping ensure that the Province's major occasions run smoothly. Their enthusiasm, teamwork and willingness to serve are a perfect example of the Every Brother Matters ethos, where every contribution, no matter how visible or behind the scenes, helps strengthen Freemasonry across Durham.
Following his own appointment, John Watts was delighted to make a promotion of his own, appointing Provincial Grand Secretary Richard Scott to the rank of Past Provincial Grand Steward. The honour recognised Richard's dedicated service to the Province and added another special moment to an evening celebrating service, teamwork and commitment.
John Watts said:
"It was a privilege and a real honour to be welcomed into the Provincial Stewards Lodge. Although this was a light-hearted field promotion, it carries an important message. Every Brother Matters, regardless of rank or appointment, and Provincial Stewards demonstrate that through their willingness to serve others. They are often the first friendly faces people meet at our events and their commitment helps make everything we do possible. I was delighted to become one of them on the first anniversary of my installation."
Andrew Foster added:
"This was a wonderful opportunity to recognise the teamwork that exists throughout Durham Freemasons. Provincial Stewards represent service in its truest sense, quietly giving their time to support others and the Province. Welcoming John into the Stewards Lodge demonstrates that leadership is about serving others and reinforces our belief that Every Brother Matters."
A memorable evening, a historic first and a reminder that, whatever our role or appointment, we are all part of the same team, supporting one another and making a difference across Durham.
