Tom has been a member of Eslington Lodge No. 4623 since being Initiated on 9th May 1956. He was Passed on 10th October and Raised on 12th December of the same year. He is now 95 years old, having celebrated his birthday on 22nd April.
Earlier in April, Malcolm Ormiston had the opportunity to visit Tom at his home in Culloden Moor near Inverness to present him with a 70-year certificate. This presentation would normally be carried out by the Provincial Grand Master or his Deputy; however, as Lodge Secretary of Eslington, and being in the area on a short break, Malcolm - following discussions with Martin Rankin, Assistant Provincial Grand Master - was honoured to meet Tom and his family.
Tom was overwhelmed by the visit and deeply appreciative of receiving his certificate, which is to be displayed prominently in his home. He expressed sincere gratitude that he has not been forgotten after all these years.
He had been living in Rowlands Gill when he was introduced into the Craft in 1956 by his then boss at Blaydon District Council. He fondly remembers the Lodge members from that time and, in later years when mobility became an issue, was especially thankful to W Bro Philip Borlace (the current Junior Warden), who kindly acted as his chauffeur to Lodge meetings.
Due to health concerns around ten years ago, Tom moved to Culloden Moor to live with his daughter Elsbeth, where he is now comfortable and well cared for.
After a pleasant couple of hours, as Malcolm took his leave, Tom asked him to convey his thanks to the Provincial Grand Master for the certificate and to pass on his best wishes to the Lodge.
It was, for Malcolm, a truly humbling experience.
