Trinity Lodge

Trinity Lodge, which was founded nearly 100 years ago, November 1925, currently has 54 members spanning various ages and backgrounds, with many actively attending our meetings. Our membership ranges from 34 to 91 years old, with an average joining age of 55 among the most recent 25 members. We are proud to have 19 Master Masons within our ranks.

Our members come from diverse professions, including public service, the trades, the armed forces, and academia, with many joining through personal recommendations.

Beyond our Masonic work, we host a variety of social events for members, partners, and guests. These range from formal Ladies’ Nights and dinners to relaxed social evenings, fostering a strong sense of fellowship.

Based at Freemasons’ Hall in Darlington, we enjoy excellent opportunities to engage with our brother and sister lodges within the building, both ceremonially and socially.

At Trinity Lodge, we take pride in working together to deliver meaningful ritual and ceremonial with good humour and dedication. This commitment creates special and memorable evenings, particularly for new members and guests.

Charity is at the heart of our lodge. Each year, we raise and donate between £3,000 and £5,000 to local non-Masonic causes while also supporting the Masonic Charitable Foundation and the Province of Durham’s charitable projects through the Durham Freemasons Charity. Our efforts are further strengthened by our established Charitable Trust, which enables us to make a lasting impact.

We are honoured to have received a Platinum Award for our contributions to the Durham 2021 Festival Appeal, reflecting our commitment to charitable giving.

Through a strong sense of camaraderie, a dedication to service, and a passion for ritual, we continue to uphold the values that make Freemasonry such a rewarding experience..

In Trinity Lodge, the initiation of a new member is a significant and meaningful event. Our meetings often centre around welcoming a new Mason into the fraternity through a carefully structured ceremony-a symbolic play based on the building of King Solomon’s Temple.

During this initiation ceremony, the candidate, known as The Initiate, takes part in a journey rich in tradition and symbolism. While certain elements-such as a brief blindfolding and the rolling up of a trouser leg-may seem unusual, they hold deep symbolic meaning, which is fully explained as the ceremony unfolds.

Once initiated, the candidate becomes a Brother and a full member of the lodge. Their Masonic journey continues with two further ceremonies:

The Ceremony of Passing (Second Degree), representing growth and learning.

The Ceremony of Raising (Third Degree), symbolising the cycle of life and deeper understanding.

Every Mason, regardless of experience or ability, is valued and encouraged to participate in a way that suits them-whether through involvement in the ritual, administrative support, or helping to organize social events. Freemasonry is a collective effort, and every contribution strengthens our bond of brotherhood.
