The Bewick Lodge

The Bewick Lodge No 5988 was granted its warrant on the 2nd August 1944 and consecrated on 16th December 1944 under charter from the United Grand Lodge of England, an amazing testament to the resolve of its members to undertake the founding of this Lodge when World War II was still raging on in Europe. It was founded to mark the twenty-first anniversary of the consecration of Prince Edwin Lodge No.4519. Founding membership was initially restricted to the members of the Prince Edwin Lodge. The name “Bewick” was selected in honour of Thomas Bewick, the renowned wood engraver and to celebrate his association with the Borough of Gateshead. The excellence of his work won him national fame and distinction in the world of literature and art, and he was acknowledged to be a craftsman of the very highest standing and a superb creative artist. We in turn maintain the age-old traditions of the Lodge with good ritual in a friendly atmosphere where all current and new masons are welcome..

The Bewick Lodge 5988 is a friendly Lodge who’s members enjoy meeting with like-minded people both in the Lodge and afterwards during the social side of the evening, we are proud of our commitment to performing our ceremonies to the highest possible standard but all the while at its core is the enjoyment of Freemasonry. Our commitment to charitable causes is at the heart of what we do, which is the focus at our December meetings when our family and friends both Masonic and non-Masonic join us for the meal after our Lodge meeting, where we raise money for a local charity selected each year by the Master of the Lodge
