Get to Know Us

Who We Are

St Mary’s Lodge and its members believe they are one of the most respected Lodges in the Province with their Membership increasing year-on-year. The Lodge will be celebrating their Centenary in 2027 for which plans are already at an advanced stage. They are also very proud to be a daughter Lodge of the Lodge of Industry No. 48.

Overall Membership is varied by age and experience with the Lodge having a wide range of young enthusiastic Brethren, Senior Provincial Officers and experienced individuals.

The Lodge enjoys good attendances from its Members and Visiting Brethren in the Gateshead Masonic Centre and they always make their Visiting Brethren most welcome.

St Mary’s Lodge place great emphasis on the quality of their ceremonies and value every Member and the contribution they make to the Lodge.

What We Do

St Mary’s Lodge practice the values and traditions of Freemasonry, but at the same time embrace technology, innovation, support our Province and UGLE.

The Ritual work is ‘Old Working’ style. They also fully support any initiatives requested by the Masonic Authorities, both locally and nationally, and work tirelessly with our membership to introduce any initiatives to maintain and indeed improve our standards.

Why Join Us

One of the big attractions of St Mary’s Lodge to many is our Friday Night Meeting time. We attract a lot of interest as we enhance this with an emphasis on a high standard of Ritual Work and an enjoyable Festive Board. The Lodge is extremely innovative in its practices; very aware of the personal morals, standards, responsibilities and principles of Freemasony and Freemasons and how this can be included within today’s more ‘modern and changing world’. Every month the Lodge is well-attended and Brethren are guaranteed to have an enjoyable night. Our emphasis and practice of good ritual will always be a priority and is imperative to our Lodge, our organisation and our future. The atmosphere on Lodge nights reflects this with Members and Visiting Brethren looking forward to a good ceremony and an enjoyable Festive Board which follows where standards are maintained but in a less formal and enjoyable manner.

St Mary’s Lodge are an integral part of masonic life within Gateshead and take our responsibilities for our building, our fellow Lodges, our Province and our area very seriously. We support the Provincial Grand Master and his Executive in all their initiatives and ideas.

Within the Lodge there is a good number of senior Provincial Officers amongst our Membership who oversee the standards that are expected. Those high standards are passed on to candidates and anyone who joins our Lodge with direct support from our Membership Officer, our Almoner, our Mentor and many other Brethren who are on hand to advise and assist. In recent years, St Mary’s Lodge are privileged to have quite a few Brethren from Lodges that have closed in our area and building joining us. Great efforts to integrate them into the Lodge and educate them is made and so important to maintain their continuity of Membership and not fall into the Retrievals and Retentions situation.
