Gyrwy Lodge were consecrated just after the Second World War on the 11th June 1947. The Lodge was formed at a time when membership of the local lodges was growing and in order to satisfy the demand it was decided that a new lodge was needed, Gywry duly being formed by founding members from other Jarrow and Hebburn lodges, predominantly St Bede Lodge.
What We Do
A typical meeting would consist of the formal aspect, to carry out lodge business followed by the social side consisting of a meal in an informal setting to allow each to talk to their friends and generally catch up. Whilst there is a formality and regularity to the proceedings, this does not impact on the warm and friendly atmosphere that is actively encouraged.
We pride ourselves on being a friendly and welcoming lodge, with interesting evenings and forward thinking initiatives whilst always being mindful of the traditions of the organisation. We nurture individual aspiration and desire for proactive involvement that makes Freemasonry special to each member, each for their own reasons. This is done to allow each individual to involve themselves as they see fit and to enjoy being with like-minded individuals.

Our members come from a wide range of ages, backgrounds, careers and interests, each bringing their own individuality to the lodge and to our meetings. This diversity enhances the general ambience and has ensured that the lodge has remained vibrant and a pleasure to attend.
Members hobbies and interests are often in the public realm, within our local community and it is without doubt that you will have encountered a member without knowing they are also a mason.
Charitable efforts are common and encouraged although this is very much a case of each to their own and without detriment to one’s everyday life. Members of our lodge are involved in various charitable enterprises as well as working with masonic charities.
