| Welcome to
the Freemasonry in the Community part of the Provincial Grand
Lodge of Durham’s website. The following pages contain
news of the help and support that lodges within the Province
are giving to their local communities, together with contact
details of the Committee and the Ambassadors who are attached
to every Masonic Hall.
Today,
it is the wish of the Provincial Grand Master and his Executive
Committee that this community involvement should continue.
To this end it is the aim of the Freemasonry in the Community
Committee to assist lodges in their efforts and to co-ordinate
and support initiatives across the Province.
Since
the inception of the organisation freemasons have supported
their local communities through charitable giving. During
Victorian times it was a common sight in many towns to witness
processions of freemasons in full regalia marching from their
lodge room to lay the foundation stones of important public
buildings. The celebrations to commemorate Queen Victoria’s
1887 Jubilee are just one example, with freemasons hosting
parties, dinners and outings for children and the distressed. |
