The Past Masters Jewel, is given to all Masters, by the Lodge at the end of their year of Office. It is a remarkably beautiful piece of regalia, which is made up of a miniturised, hand painted, depiction of the Lodge Badge (which is explained elsewhere in this site). The Badge is suspended on a blue ribbon, which in turn is suspended from a pin bar, on which is inscribed, in Latin the number in sequence of the Master to whom the Jewel was presented. The Jewel shown in the attached picture belongs to the fifty forth Master of Crowley Lodge. Should the Master have held office more than once, then a bar is added to the ribbon which is inscribed again with the numerical sequence of that year as Master. Below the Lodge Badge is suspended the Square which is the emblem that represents the Master, Being Master of a Lodge, is the highest honour that the Lodge can confer on any of its members. However, there are responsibilities to go along with that honour. The Master is responsible for the Honour and reputation of his Lodge while he is in Office, he is therefore expected to be a leader by example. He will be the key figure at any functions that the Lodge may hold, as well as being the main representative of his Lodge at the meetings of other Lodges. This can make for a busy schedule, which could never be sustained without the support of his family. It is in recognition of these responsibilities, that the Lodge commissions the manufacturing of this wonderful Jewel. The Past Master may then where it with pride at all the Lodge meetings he attends from then on.
