Reproduced with the permission of Norman Hunter The purpose of the Crowley Badge is to preserve in our minds the link between Crowley Lodge and Sir Ambrose Crowley. He was responsible for providing us with our ancestors in Freemasonry as there is no doubt that the Lodge of Industry, which met at Swalwell, was formed from and by the Operative Masons employed by Sir Ambrose Crowley and these roots are pictorially shown in our badge.

The name of the Lodge is linked with Sir Ambrose Crowley by the picture of the protective leather jerkin worn by his ironworkers as a protection from the flying anvil sparks and is shown in the lower quarter of our Badge.

Reproduced with the permission of Norman Hunter In the right quarter is a contraction of the crest of the Liddell Family which is the Lodge of our Mother - Liddell Lodge No. 3616.

In the left quarter is the Beehive which is the Badge of the Lodge of Industry, No. 48 - our Grandmother, and Mother of Liddell Lodge.

In the top quarter is the Badge of the Masons Craft Guild with the compasses added and placed on the chevron, as used in the Badge of the Grand Lodge of England, illustrating that Crowley Lodge owes allegiance to the Grand Lodge of England and is directly descended from an Operative Lodge.

The Badge surround is taken from the Lodge carpet border.

On the top there are three rosettes representing "the three who rule a Lodge".

Reproduced with the permission of Norman Hunter At the two lower corners, double circles represent "two fellow crafts" necessary to provide 'the five who hold a Lodge'.

At the two corners, still lower plain circles represent "two entered apprentices", which when added to the former five form "A Perfect Lodge".

Since we believe that perfect Lodges are depicted in the four quarters, it is fitting that symbolic brethren should be p1aced on the surround as a mark of respect and reverence for Free-masonry.

Having obtained our Badge it only remained to find appropriate Latin quotations to express the aims of the Badge and the Lodge - viz.:- (1) The ideals and aspirations of our Ancestors as promoted by Sir Ambrose Crowley. (2) The character and work of our Ancestors. Thus we translate:- The first couplet - Labore at Honore - By Labour and Honour. The second couplet - More Majorum - After the manner of our ancestors.

I think we are bound to agree that the Latin quotations could not have been more expressive or appropriate.

Reproduced with the permission of Norman Hunter For the entire conception of the Badge, the research work entailed and the negotiating of the permissions necessary before we could incorporate the Badges of the Province, the Lodge of Industry and Liddell Lodge in the Badge of Crowley Lodge we are and ever will be, indebted to our First Master -
W. Bro. A. S. Dixon, P.P.A.G.D.C.
