Laying The Foundation Stone in July 2000

On 1st July 2000, on a beautiful Summer morning, Durham Freemasons and their wives, families and friends gathered at Beamish to witness and take part in a Ceremony which had not been performed in the Province for over 70 years.

The Provincial Grand Master, accompanied in procession by approximately 350 Brethren in Masonic Regalia, after opening Provincial Grand Lodge, proceeded through the townscape of Beamish to lay the Foundation Stone of the Hall in traditional Masonic ceremony.

Before laying the stone in position, The Provincial Grand Master addressed the gathering of over three thousand people. He outlined the great progress that had been made between the Province and the Beamish authorities and he said how delighted he was to be able to lay The Foundation Stone of what will be a truly magnificent building.

Following the Ceremony, The Provincial Grand Master and his Brethren, processed back through the Town after which they were able to remove their Regalia and join in a large family picnic in the grounds of Beamish.
